2 Timothy 4:5-6
5 But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry.
6 For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand.
Today I went with my pastor, also my father, to preach at another church. He preached a good message, but as he was preaching I begin to realize how he was no longer the young preacher I grew up watching and listening to. His black hair is turning white and his eyes are growing tired. A thought came to me, “who will take his place and take up the torch.” It’s not just him so many pastors and evangelist are growing older. They will eventually have to pass the torch. I myself am nearing 30 and I wonder if my generation is ready to pick it up and continue the fight. The thing is we have to be. We have to carry it on and spread the word of God. We have to reach the sinners. One day we will become the pastors and evangelist. We will be the ones being called to pray for the sick. The sad part is we should already be doing these things. We should already be prepared to carry the torch. It is time we get serious because before we know it we will be the elders who you preachers and evangelist call for advice. Let’s get ready to carry the torch.
Such a great reminder. We know it’s true our dad, a pastor for twenty-plus years, just recently resigned, and with no to pick up his torch our small church closed.
The use of the phrase ‘carry the torch’ reminds us of S. D. Smith’s quote from his book series ‘The Green Ember’ which says. “The seed of the new world smolders, healing is on the horizon, but a fire comes first, Bear the Flame!”
So, let’s strive to carry the torch and bear the flame of God in our hearts!

It breaks my heart to hear of a church closing it’s doors. Thank you for sharing that with me. I pray that when my father steps down that one of us younger pastors will step up and continue the work.
