Are We Worthy?

2 Samuel 23:15-17

15 And David longed, and said, Oh that one would give me drink of the water of the well of Bethlehem, which is by the gate!
16 And the three mighty men brake through the host of the Philistines, and drew water out of the well of Bethlehem, that was by the gate, and took it, and brought it to David: nevertheless he would not drink thereof, but poured it out unto the LORD.
17 And he said, Be it far from me, O LORD, that I should do this: is not this the blood of the men that went in jeopardy of their lives? therefore he would not drink it. These things did these three mighty men

In the mist of battle King David ask for a drink from one certain well. His loyal and mighty men broke through the enemy and went and got it. Now think not only did they fight to get there, also had to fight to get back. But once they returned the king saw he was not worthy of the drink and poured it out. Most people today would be upset after there hard work that he just poured it out, but these men knew that the mighty king David had just humbled himself and accepted he was not worthy of their sacrifice. Now think of how Jesus feels. He left heaven to wage war on our behalf. He come to earth to be sacrificed and spill his blood for sinners like us and we don’t even serve the mightiest king to ever exist. We are far from worthy of his sacrifice, but still Jesus loved us enough to hang on the cross. We need to accept the drink of living water that he has given us.
